Back-to-school shopping has a special talent.

You go in for pencils and socks… and somehow leave with a receipt long enough to qualify as light reading. 😅

Between clothes, shoes, school supplies, lunch boxes, and all those “small extras,” the cost can climb quickly. The trick is not to buy everything as cheaply as possible.

The trick is to buy only what your child genuinely needs, at the right time, without last-minute panic spending.

Here is a calmer way to handle it.

1. Check what you already have first

Before buying anything, look through last year’s supplies, wardrobes, drawers, backpacks, and lunch equipment.

You may already have perfectly usable:

  • Pencils, rulers, folders, and notebooks

  • Jackets and sports clothes

  • Lunch boxes and water bottles

  • Shoes that still fit

  • Art supplies hiding in three different cupboards

This ten-minute check can save more money than chasing another sale.

2. Declutter before you shop

Remove clothes that no longer fit, damaged supplies, dried-out pens, and anything your child has outgrown.

This gives you a clear picture of what is missing and prevents buying duplicates.

A tidy wardrobe and school drawer also make those busy mornings much easier. Nobody needs a household investigation at 7:12 a.m. over one missing sock.

3. Shop from a written checklist

Walking into a shop without a list is how “just the basics” turns into novelty stationery, three water bottles, and a backpack nobody needed.

Divide your list into simple categories:

  • Clothes: uniforms, everyday outfits, underwear, socks, shoes, sportswear and outerwear.

  • School supplies: notebooks, pencils, pens, folders, art supplies and anything specifically requested by the school.

  • Lunch essentials: lunch box, water bottle, reusable containers and labels.

Your checklist is the boss. The glittery aisle is not.

4. Set a budget before opening your wallet

Decide what you can comfortably spend and assign an amount to each category.

For example:

  • Clothes and shoes

  • School supplies

  • Lunch equipment

  • Emergency extras

Keep track as you shop. A few small overspends across several categories can quietly wreck the whole budget.

5. Buy the urgent items first

Not everything must be purchased before the first day.

Prioritise:

  • Required school supplies

  • Properly fitting shoes

  • Essential clothes or uniforms

  • A functioning lunch box and water bottle

Extra outfits, decorative supplies, and backup items can often wait until later sales—or until you know they are actually needed.

6. Compare prices, but protect your time too

Check a few trusted shops and online options before buying bigger items such as shoes, backpacks, and uniforms.

But do not spend four hours driving around town to save two euros on coloured pencils. That is not saving money. That is joining a travelling stationery circus.

Set a reasonable comparison limit and make the best decision you can.

7. Choose durable over trendy

The cheapest option is not always the most affordable.

A sturdy backpack, reliable shoes, or reusable lunch containers may cost slightly more upfront but last much longer than flimsy replacements.

For trendy items, consider letting your child choose one or two fun pieces while keeping the main purchases practical.

8. Prepare school lunches before the chaos begins

Back-to-school spending does not stop at clothes and notebooks.

Daily lunches, snacks, emergency supermarket trips, and wasted food can become a quiet drain on the family budget.

Planning even a few lunches in advance helps you:

  • Shop with purpose

  • Use ingredients across several meals

  • Reduce food waste

  • Avoid expensive last-minute convenience foods

  • Make mornings far less frantic

A little planning on Sunday can save both money and patience by Wednesday.
